We are proud to be delivering a new dementia-focused initiative in partnership with Dementia NI, aimed at promoting physical activity, social engagement, and fun through the power of table tennis.
As part of this program, we are visiting 12 dementia support groups across Ulster, providing taster sessions that allow participants to experience table tennis in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. These sessions are about more than just sport—they’re about connection, laughter, and wellbeing.
Table tennis has been shown to have a positive impact on a range of neurological conditions, including dementia, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. The gentle physical movement, mental stimulation, and social interaction make it an ideal activity for people living with these conditions.
So far, we’ve visited 5 out of the 12 groups, and the response has been fantastic. Many participants shared that they hadn’t played since school—but that didn’t stop the fun! There’s been no shortage of craic and camaraderie, with plenty of smiles, laughter, and even a few competitive rallies.
Our long-term goal is to explore the possibility of setting up Dementia Bat & Chat groups in local areas, similar to the successful Parkinson’s groups we already support. These groups would provide regular opportunities for people living with dementia to come together, stay active, and enjoy the many benefits that table tennis brings to mental, physical, and social wellbeing.
We look forward to delivering the remaining sessions and continuing to build lasting connections through this exciting program.
