The 8th February 2024 proved a busy day in Ulster Schools’ Cup Primary Schools table tennis with 172 pupils in 43 teams trying to win one of the six events contested in Banbridge Leisure Centre.
There was a good spread of winners with the two main events, the u12 Boys and u12 girls team events won by Ballydown PS, Banbridge and Andrews Memorial PS, Comber respectively. Special mention must be made of the u12 Girl’s final between Andrews Memorial and St Mary’s PS, Banbridge which ended all square requiring first, a countback of sets won – which still could not separate the teams, and then a countback of total points won. Andrews Memorial had won by a single point. Cheers and tears were evident in equal measure. Both Ballydown and Andrews Memorial will now represent Ulster in the All- Ireland finals in the National Indoor Arena in Dublin on the 25th April.
The u10 Boys event was won by Edenderry PS and the Irish Society in Coleraine taking the u10 girl’s event. The Irish Society also won the u10 mixed group event with Strandtown PS, Belfast taking the u12 mixed event.
A big thank you to all the players for attending and all the teachers, TTU officials, Leisure Centre staff and the small dedicated group of volunteers who ensured that the event took place by sourcing tables from various locations, setting up each table tennis court with umpire tables, chairs and scoreboards to make the event a memorable experience. The record attendance at the event pays tribute to Table Tennis Ulster’s continued emphasis on increased participation and hopefully beckons a bright future as organised table tennis in Ireland enters its second century.
